valence

A term used to indicate either the oxidation state of an atom (ion) or the number of electron pair bonds which an atom can form.

valence bond theory

A theory of bonding in which atomic orbitals overlap and share electron pairs to form bonds.

van der Waals forces
Attractive forces between molecules due to:
London forces,
polar molecules,
hydrogen bonds.

VSEPR approach to molecular geometry

VSEPR stands for Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion.
This approach does not always deal with electron pairs, as all bond pairs between two atoms are considered as a single group of electrons.

In this approach
Four groups spread out towards the corners of a tetrahedron in a shape called tetrahedral.
Three groups spread out towards the corners of an equilateral triangle in a shape called trigonal planar.
Two groups are as far away from each other as possible, the shape is called linear.
